Housing Model : Intentional Community

  • We are currently in the planning stages and not yet in the building stage. We are working hard to bring our project to fruition and will provide updates as progress is made.

  • Our vision for each housing site. It should ideally be not far from local amenities, hospitals, entertainment and as close to the parents’ homes as possible.

  • We are aiming for 20 - 30 individuals with IDD per housing site. Each housing site will consist of a total of 40-60 residents, as well as paid staff.

  • We are aiming for one of the homes who will have a site manager and live in caregivers as backups to cover those who are sick or on vacation

  • The village community will consist of wheelchair-accessible, new manufactured homes, or apartment buildings, depending on what is allowed and what we can secure, half of which will be housing for individuals or “villagers” with IDD and the other half for adults without IDD. Those adults must consent to background checks.

  • The adults without IDD will be paying much lower-than-market rent or mortgage payments to our non-profit corporation will help sustain the community long-term, paying for support staff and other long-term expenses. It will be attractive, affordable housing.

  • The villagers with IDD could pay a fee on a sliding scale if needed.

  • Residents without IDD will also be encouraged, but not forced, to act as 'good neighbours,' socializing with the IDD residents.

  • The community should have a community room, coffee store, greenhouse, small grocery store and nurses, PSWs and possibly dental professionals on-site. The plan is for adults with IDD to work in these environments and gain life skills.
